Today

Ian had his third and last round of leukapheresis yesterday afternoon. Apparently things weren't exciting enough, so he decided to give everybody a scare. He had to get up to go the bathroom, so everyone left to give him privacy, and while he was doing his business he passed out. He hit his head pretty good and has a knot on it this morning. Its a good thing he's made a habit of falling on his head, so this didn't even phase it. Really the problem was that his blood pressure just got super low, it was 52/25 (normal is 120/80), so once he laid back down and they pumped him full of fluids he did okay. It certainly got everyone's attention though. The doctor, the PA, 3-4 nurses, and a few CNAs all came rushing in. I missed most of the action since I had gone home to shower and do laundry and stuff. I came in right after though.

While he's been here, Ian has had a bunch of tests to make sure that everything is working okay. He's had an EKG, an ultrasound of his heart, and an ultrasound of his abdomen, not to mention a billion blood draws. His spleen is enlarged, which is fairly normal with Leukemia apparently, but when they did the abdominal ultrasound to look at it, they noticed his right kidney was a little enlarged as well. He also has blood creatinine levels (which is an indicator of kidney function) that are a little high. They've been at 1.2 the whole time we've been here, and they're supposed to be below one. It's not really a big concern right now, but they're going to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get worse. Because of that he's supposed to have an abdominal CT scan today. It was originally supposed to be yesterday, but since he fainted, they put it off.

The good thing about being in the hospital in Salt Lake is that they hold church here. Its shortened a lot, with Sacrament only 30 minutes, no Sunday School, and Priesthood/Relief Society is only 30 minutes.
This is Ian icing his battle wound. On his chest you can see his central line. He uses it as an excuse to show off his chest. He says its because it doesn't work with his IVs if he closes his hospital gown, but I know what it really is. Last night his central line was bleeding a little bit, so they had to change the dressing at 3 in the morning. So fun.
This is the lovely (or not so much) recliner that I get to sleep in. It wouldn't be bad except I can't really sleep on my back because of the baby, and the top has a tendency to fold up every time I move. I keep threatening Ian that I'm going to take the bed.

This is taken from the door, so you can see that the room isn't terribly spacious. We do have a window at least, over on the other side of the chair. It faces east, so we have a good view of the mountains and all the hospitals at the U.

  1. I like Ian's socks. Maybe we'll send some pink ones! Good luck on all the tests.
